English living on a grand scale

English living lives on on a grand scale in Hardy’s Dorset close to the coast. There are rooms for curling up and reading, fires to witness family games, drinks in the drawing room, grounds for picnics and lawns for high tea. Sit back and drink to England.

The only way is Wessex

This is where Thomas Hardy painted verbal pictures of a land he called Wessex. That was a myth, but The Old Manor House in deepest Dorset is real enough. In fact, it’s larger than life. There’s swagger in the swagged curtains, ancient wonder in the wood panelling and a staircase for which the word sashay was invented.

There are huge spaces to reacquaint yourself with family and friends, and places to escape to, too. The garden room is ripe for a curl and a read. The kitchen and gym are modern swells in a sea of classical beauty.

Wander the rose garden before lunch, amble among the fruit trees, spot hares amid the herbaceous borders, walk the woods. After dinner, the garden room’s the place for coffee or something stronger, or sit out on the balcony outside the magnificent drawing room to watch over family games.

Indulge in English living on a grand scale. Take tea on the lawn, picnic in the grounds, take drinks in the drawing room. Live life large in the grandest manner possible. Truly, the only way is Wessex.

''My friends and I found our stay at The Manor House, Puddletown over New Year 2015 a delight. A beautiful house with an equally lovely garden, quiet and secluded and yet in the centre of the village. Gracious well furnished rooms – awesome at first; cosy and familiar by the end of the week. Log fires laid and ready to be lit and plenty more logs and kindling ready to be collected from the woodstore. We had our traditional black tie dinner on New Year’s Eve by candlelight – unforgettable. More than enough space for 8 adults and 6 kids and 4 cars. Excellent walking in the beautiful Dorset countryside from our door; and no distance at all to the spoonbills at RSPB Arne, the chance to go fossiling on the beach at Lyme Regis and the Cerne Abbas Giant for a naughty pint of fine local bitter. I’d recommend it to anyone.'' - John
"Simply beautiful. We were impressed from the moment we arrived to the second my husband forced me to leave. We had a great time." - Janice

"Thanks for an amazing weekend at The Old Manor. We absolutely loved the house and the gardens – a proper treat. Really appreciated how welcome you made us feel, not least the lovely hamper with all the essentials and the fire places ready-to-go. We’ll definitely return. Can’t recommend the place highly enough!" - Amanda

Comb the coast or cram in a cream tea
